TODAY ON THE FLOOR
Today, the Georgia House of Representatives convened at 10:00 am this morning to officially kickoff the 1st Regular Session of the 149th General Assembly. Brought to order by the Clerk of the House, Robert Rivers, Jr., all 180 members of the House were in attendance, including the twenty-four freshmen members of the House. After taking their oath of office, the newly sworn in Members took their first official action as State Representatives by electing the Speaker of the House. By a vote of 113 to 66, Speaker of the House, Rep. Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram), was re-elected to a second term after being nominated by Speaker Pro Tempore, Rep. Mark Burkhalter (R-Alpharetta). House Minority Leader, Rep. Dubose Porter (D-Dublin) received the Democratic nomination for Speaker, but did not receive a majority of votes cast. The next vote on the House floor was the election of the Speaker Pro Tempore, in which Rep. Mark Burkhalter was re-elected without opposition.
As mostly a ceremonial day and a day of organization of the House, several other officers and the Rules of the House received passage to begin the legislative session. Clerk of the House, Robert Rivers, Jr., was re-elected by the members to serve another term as House Clerk, and Phil Tucker was elected as the official Doorkeeper of the House, and Roger Hines, as the official Messenger of the House. After the members voted in favor of the House Rules, the Speaker announced the House would stand in recess so that Members could attend the inauguration ceremonies of Georgia's constitutional officers. The House will reconvene for its 2nd Legislative Day tomorrow morning, Tuesday, January 9, 2007 at 10:00am.
* NO LEGISLATIVE ACTION ON HOUSE BILLS WAS TAKEN TODAY.
