Fight Against Meth Brings Recognition for State Representative Jay Neal

ATLANTA During a visit to the Capitol earlier this week, members of the Walker and Catoosa County Leadership looked on as one of their own was honored by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. State Representative Jay Neal (R-Lafayette), was presented with a certificate of appreciation by GBI Director Vernon Keenan for his role in the war on drugs.

Keenan commended Neal for authoring the legislation, "which has resulted in the dramatic decrease in the number of meth labs present in the state of Georgia." He went on to add that "a law enforcement assessment has shown that the legislation in conjunction with aggressive law enforcement has decreased last year's number by 19%."

Neal authored House Bill 216 during the 2005 Legislative Session, which was signed into law by Governor Perdue soon after passing both the House and Senate Chambers. The legislation addresses the increased manufacturing and use of Methamphetamines in Georgia and surrounding areas by increasing awareness of the problem and limiting key ingredients.

"I appreciate the opportunity to work with Director Keenan. His input was crucial in drafting HB 216. Senator Mullis played a huge role in pushing this vital piece of legislation through the legislative process. The Drug Enforcement Agency has recently released figures showing a 63% decrease in the number of meth labs found in the first quarter. While having such and impact in protecting our communities, and more importantly, our children from the dangerous meth labs is my primary concern, this recognition from Director Keenan and the GBI is very gratifying."
