The funding was part of a $1.7 billion national Homeland Security Grant Program, designed to enhance the ability of states, urban areas and territories to prepare for and respond to terrorist attacks and other disasters. They can be used for planning, organization, equipment, training, exercises, and administration.
A portion of the funding, $132,920, has been earmarked for the Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team; while the remaining $625,000 will go towards the Georgia Search and Rescue Team (Type II) which is based in the area.
"This funding will go a long way towards making sure that Douglas County and the rest of West Georgia are ready to handle any emergency, giving us the protection and peace of mind that our community deserves," Representative Hembree stated.
