The Georgia Environmental Protection Division will be administering the grants from the Hazardous Waste Trust Fund. Over $7 million will be distributed from the fund to 71 cities and counties throughout the state in an effort to prevent landfill leakage from contaminating soil and groundwater and other environmental hazards.

"This funding will protect citizens and clean up environmental hazards in Georgia communities. The Hazardous Waste Trust Fund is a priority that I was proud to fully fund in the last budge cycle," Governor Perdue remarked upon announcing the grant recipients.

Governor Perdue included $8.3 million in the Fiscal Year 2006 supplemental budget and $7.6 million in the Fiscal Year 2007 budget for the Hazardous Waste Trust Fund. The balance of the trust fund will be used for cleanup at abandoned hazardous waste sites and for reductions in hazardous waste generation.

"These grants will be a huge asset to our area, not only for environmental reasons, but also in protecting the people that live here," Representative Sims stated.
