ATLANTA--In response to the phenomenal growth of the Douglas County School System, which happens to be the 11 th largest in the state, Representative Bill Hembree (R-Douglasville) sought action to amend an overcrowding problem. Hembree is currently serving as the Chairman of the House Higher Education Committee, and felt that it was important to do something for his local area constituents.
With an enrollment of over 1,000 students per quarter, and only 37,000 square feet of space in existence, the Douglas Branch of the West Central Technical College is in serious need of expansion. In response to this great need, Hembree was able to secure $190,000 in State funds to help design the proposed annex.
The Douglas Campus has been in operation for 10 years, and is already over 100% of its capacity of 500 students. The annexation project will also help eliminate overcrowding problems present in the area's high schools, being used for the Douglas County Career Educational Institute.
"I think that it is of the utmost importance for us to make sure that our students are provided with facilities to further their education. With the increased enrollment in Douglas County, I felt that it was necessary to aid these students in their quest for knowledge by making sure that local facilities are available to them."
Many students are put on a waiting list to attend the University each quarter. In the past, they have sought relief from the overcrowding problem by renting nearby office space and holding evening classes at First Baptist Church. The proposed annex would increase the available campus space by almost 200%.
