BUCKNER RECOGNIZED FOR EFFORTS TO PROTECT ARCHIVES
Atlanta State Representative Gail Buckner, D-Jonesboro, has recently been named a recipient of
the 2004 Outstanding Archives Award for Legislative Advocacy. The award was given on behalf
of the Honorable Cathy Cox, Secretary of State and the Georgia Historical Records advisory
Board. The awards presentation will occur on Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Georgia Archives
located in Morrow.
The Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board supports efforts to improve the condition of historical records statewide and to promote the educational use of Georgia's documentary heritage. GHRAB established the Archives Awards program in 2003 to recognize outstanding efforts in archives and records programs in Georgia. Because of representative Buckner's efforts in this area, she has been chosen a recipient of the 2004 awards.
Representative Buckner, a member of the Georgia General Assembly since 1991, has been a strong supporter of the Georgia Archives. Just this year, she led the passage of legislation that allows the state to stop the sale of stolen government records, and permits action to recover stolen records. Because of Buckner's efforts, Georgia law now allows the Georgia Archives the ability to initiate action to prevent the sale, transfer, conveyance, destruction, or alienation of any records, books, documents, or other office property, which has been unlawfully removed.
