For Immediate Release:
House Leaders' Northwest Georgia Tour Focuses on Economic Development and Tourism

Atlanta State Representative Barbara Reece, D- Menlo is currently taking part in a tour of Northwest Georgia focusing on economic development and tourism. The multi-day event covers much of the enterprises and tourist attractions located in the area of the state. "This tour is to showcase Northwest Georgia, and to educate the Economic Development and Tourism Committee on how to attract new businesses to the area, promote tourism in Northwest Georgia, and to examine problems facing businesses in the area", Representative Reece said.

The tour, which is taking Representative Reece and her colleagues throughout Northwest Georgia, covers Chattooga, Floyd, and Walker Counties. Currently touring Chattooga and Walker Counties, the group visited Mount Vernon Mills in Trion, the largest producer of denim where the group is examining ways to ensure fair foreign trade to benefit the manufacturers. Another stopping point for the group was the Bluebird Company of Walker County located in Lafayette. Bluebird produces one half of all buses produced in the country. Mohawk Industries of Somerville, the third largest employer in the state, and Best Manufacturing of Menlo, the largest manufacturer of work gloves were other points of interest the group visited.

Traveling with Representative Reece are Economic Development and Tourism Chair, Butch Parrish, DSwainsboro, Rep. Mike Snow, D-Chickamauga, Rep. JoAnn McClinton, D-Atlanta, Rep. Bill Cummings, D-Rockmart, Transportation Chairman, Paul Smith, D-Rome, Speaker of the House, Terry Coleman, DEastman, and Emory McClinton of the Department of Transportation Board. Speaker Coleman added, "This trip is very insightful. We are examining ways to enhance the economic prosperity of businesses of the area such as trying to get fabric made at Mount Vernon Mills to be used in state department uniforms." The tour ends tomorrow with visits to James S. Floyd State Park, and other industries and tourist sites in Floyd County.
