MOSLEY JOINS CORRECTIONS ADVISORY BOARD AIM IS TO HELP EX-OFFENDERS FIND WORK
Atlanta State Representative Hinson Mosley (D-Jesup) has accepted an invitation to become a charter member of the newly formed Georgia Department of Corrections Corporate Advisory Board by Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald.
The new board of advisers will be mostly comprised of leaders in the corporate world throughout Georgia and will work with the Commissioner of Corrections to establish strategies designed to enhance employment opportunities for ex-offenders.
"Our prison system has reached capacity and beyond," said Mosley. "Employed offenders are far less likely to commit new crimes than those who remain unemployed. This is why we need to make sure they re-enter society with skills they can use to find a job and contribute to Georgia's workforce." Mosley added that he is extremely pleased and honored that the newly appointed Correction's Commissioner has asked for his input on the board.
According to the Department of Corrections, one in every 15 adult Georgians is under some form of supervision today, either in prison or jail, or on probation or parole. Georgia's prison population has doubled in the past ten years to 50,000 and nearly 6 % of the state's budget is now consumed by the Department of Corrections.
Department of Corrections Commissioner James E. Donald said in his invitation letter, "Simple economics dictate we cannot continue along this path. We must begin to flatten the growth of the prison population in order to allow our elected officials to invest precious state funds in the areas that will allow the state to grow and prosper."
Rep. Mosley is chairman of the Game Fish and Parks Committee and chairs the Natural Resources Sub-Committee of Appropriations.
