Speaker Follows Howard Recommendation, Appoints Local Woman to State Council on Aging

Atlanta--House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) recently announced the appointment of Mary L. Wiley, a resident of Hephziba, to the Georgia Council on Aging. The appointment was made following the recommendation by Representative Henry Howard (D-Augusta).

"Mary is an excellent fit for this post," said Rep. Howard. "Her past work for the Department of Human Resources, combined with her record of dedicated civil service made her an ideal recommendation."

After thirty-four years of dedicated service in Georgia's Department of Human Resources, Ms. Wiley retired from the agency. In August of 2000 she became the director of the Kids at Risk Program with the New Savannah Road Social Services. The group helps inner city kids improve their lives through tutoring, counseling, and recreational activities. Ms. Wiley also coordinates the organization's Summer Enrichment Program.

"Once Rep. Howard made the recommendation and pointed out Ms. Wiley's record, this became an easy appointment," said Speaker Coleman. "She is a civic-minded Georgian who has demonstrated great concern for her fellow citizens, and I'm sure she'll do an excellent job on the council."

The Georgia Council on Aging was established by the legislature to provide guidance and advice to Georgia's state government on aging issues. The council also acts as advocate on behalf of aging Georgians and their families, with the purpose of improving their quality of life.
