Reece Participates in Steering Committee for Summit
Solutions Sought for Curbing Methamphetamine Use
Atlanta -- State Representative Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo) participated on Monday, May 24th in the first steering committee meeting for a major summit on seeking
solutions for methamphetamine abuse in Georgia sponsored by the Governor. The
committee will make final recommendations on which local agencies, from local fire departments to juvenile judges, to invite to the summit being held August 17th and 18th at
the Omni Hotel in Atlanta.
Steering committee members heard from Colleen Copple of the Department of Justice on the types of Federal grants available to fight meth abuse and also heard from Phillip Price of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who specifically noted that North West Georgia has had more meth labs than any other region of the state due in part to its close proximity to Alabama and Tennessee.
"Every state agency was represented at the steering committee meeting because it is important to get their input in determining which local communities are the most effected by this terrible drug," said Reece. "We have to make sure that all of those who are on the front lines of this fight are there to attend and they are presented with the best possible information."
In 2003 there were 1,552 prison sentences for methamphetamine use in Georgia and in the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit alone there were 349 cases. The average prison sentence lasts 5.75 years and 59 percent have probation to follow. Since 2002 there have been 821 methamphetamine admissions of those between 25-29, the most of any category.
The Steering committee will meet again Jun 17th and July 20th to finalize preparations for the summit.
Rep. Reece, a lawmaker since 1998, is Vice Chair of the Education Committee and serves on the State Institutions and Property and Economic Development and Tourism committees.
