Purcell Tapped for Art Policy Collections Management Sub-Committee
Atlanta -- State Representative Ann Purcell (D-Rincon) has been appointed to the Georgia Art Policy Collections Management Subcommittee by House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman). HB 1197, which passed during the 2000 legislative session, created the committee.
The Subcommittee is charged with managing the state capitol's art collection and considering recommendations of the collections review subcommittee before acquiring, displaying, loaning, or deaccessioning works of art.
"People visit the Capitol every year from not only Georgia but other states and all over the world," said Rep. Purcell. "It is very important we show them how much we love our state and with the help of experts in this field, we will make sure Georgia's history is proudly and properly displayed on the walls of the Capitol and the Education Center."
The collections review subcommittee that assists the collection management subcommittee in making decisions concerning acquisitions, deaccessions, and loans of works of art is made up of Georgia citizens who are recognized experts in the visual and decorative arts. This includes practicing artists and curators, experts from the academic and museum community, and historians of the state.
Under the legislation creating the committee, no works of art shall be acquired or displayed in the public areas of the state capitol or capitol education center without the approval of the Georgia Art Policy Committee's collection management subcommittee.
Rep. Purcell, a lawmaker since 1990, Chairs the Inter-State Cooperation Committee and serves on the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee, Appropriations and Economic and Development and Tourism Committees.
