House To Honor "Mother Hughes"
"Able" Mable Thomas Authors Resolution
March 18, 2004
State Rep. "Able" Mable Thomas, D-Atlanta, has authored legislation commending nurse and activist for the under privileged Mrs. Mary Clark Hughes who is affectionately known in the community as "Mother Hughes".
The measure, which invites "Mother Hughes" to appear before the House of Representatives, has been adopted by the House.
According to House Resolution 1283, "following a deep desire to help others, "Mother Hughes" enrolled in nursing school and graduated with outstanding honors."
"Mother Hughes" graduated as valedictorian at the Bennet School of Nursing and was over 50 years of age at the time of her enrollment. Mother Hughes was also the nurse of the late great State Representative Grace Hamilton.
Mrs. Hughes has been a practicing registered licensed practical nurse since 1964 and continues to maintain a current license at the age of 90 years so she is always prepared to render service when she is needed.
"It is a rare honor to celebrate the work of "Mother Hughes", Representative Thomas said. "She has a very special place in our hearts and community."
Mrs. Hughes, who has been an active member of the Mt. Zion Second Baptist Church since 1942, has for more than 60 years on her own initiative distributed boxes of clothing to the homeless and needy.
Each year for decades Mrs. Hughes has marked the celebration of her birthday by distributing one box of clothing for each year of her life.
Mrs. Hughes one-woman missionary efforts have led to community service award from WXIA-11 Alive television and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change Community Service Award.
