Local Lawmakers to Head Study on Immigration Reform
Atlanta Representatives Paul Smith (D-Rome) and Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo) have been selected to by the Immigration Reform Caucus to chair Sub-Committee studies of the effects of immigration on specific areas of state and local government. The Immigration Reform Caucus is a bi-partisan group of House lawmakers whose goal is to examine the unique challenges immigrants, both legal and illegal, place upon state and local governments. The caucus will be discussing ideas and legislative solutions to a host of immigration related issues. Among the topics addressed will be driver's licences, Medicaid, healthcare, employment, education, and community services.
"The state of Georgia spends more than $300 million in additional costs to educate children who cannot speak English when they enter the system," said Rep. Reece, who will chair the Education Sub-Committee for the Immigration Caucus. "Taken alone that's a staggering amount, but at a time when our state budget is so tight, it can be downright crippling."
"We're not on a witch hunt," added Rep. Smith, who will head the Caucus Sub-Committee on Transportation, "But these issues are real. State and local governments throughout our nation are feeling the effects, both economic and otherwise. We've got to discuss these topics in the open and search out the most well-informed and effective solutions to these problems."
A member of the Georgia House of Representatives since 1998, Rep. Reece serves and ViceChairwoman of the House Education Committee, and Chairwoman of the Regional Services Sub-Committee of the House Education Committee. She also chairs the Corrections SubCommittee of the House State Institutions and Property Committee.
Rep. Smith is the Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, and serves on the budget writing House Appropriations Committee, and the House Industrial Relations Committee.
