Vince Dooley Honored by House of Representatives

February 3, 2004

Recognized for outstanding leadership and contributions to Georgia

Atlanta Representatives Keith Heard (D-Athens), Louise McBee (D-Athens) and Bob Smith (RWatkinsville) presented Vince Dooley, the longtime football coach and athletics director for the University of Georgia, with a resolution (HR 1126) on Tuesday before the Georgia House of Representatives.

The resolution recognizing coach Dooley states that his accomplishments and contributions to the university and the State of Georgia are far to numerous to list, but it makes special mention of his 1980 national championship season as head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, his induction into the College Hall of Fame in 1984, the 18 national championships won by various athletic teams during his tenure as athletic director, and the selection of more than 100 student athletes from the university as first team Academic All-Americans.

The resolution also mentions that, in addition to his professional career achievements, he has always given most generously of his time and efforts to a wide variety of civic and charitable endeavors, including, to name only one of very many, service as chairman of the Georgia Easter Seals Society for 28 years.

In conclusion, the resolution says he will soon retire from service to the University of Georgia where he has devoted 40 years of untiring and exemplary service and has brought great honor.

"Coach Dooley is a true Georgia icon and speaking for the House of Representatives we are honored to have him here today. He has dedicated much of his life to the University of Georgia and has helped make it one of the best academic and athletic institutions in the country," said House Speaker Terry Coleman.
