Rep. Terry Coleman Calls on Support for Education Add-backs Says House budget means saving teacher positions and funding in Telfair County

Atlanta--Today Representative Terry Coleman released figures on the additions in funding for education for Telfair County in the House version of the fiscal year 2005 budget. "While we continue our struggle with the budget because of the economy, we are working hard to minimize the impact on our local school system. The House version of the FY05 budget is clearly in the best interest of our school system in Telfair County."

Representative Coleman continued, "My job as your representative is to help Telfair County fund as many teachers as we can and keep the operating level of the classroom as high as we can. He noted, "The House budget proposal for education is a tremendous improvement over the Governor's plan."

He continued, "The Governor's education budget proposes an austerity cut of $380 million that would affect 7,400 teachers. We need to do better than that. Basically the House is proposing to add back in excess of $277 million to the K-12 education budget over what the Governor proposed." Rep. Coleman noted that these add-backs include the addition of $271 million for teachers and student support personnel that could save over 7,400 positions. Additionally, the House plan restores $6.5 million in operating expenses for the state's classrooms. "These are substantial numbers that mean a great deal to all educators and parents."

Rep. Coleman stated, "What this means to Telfair County is the addition of $334,000 for funding teachers over what the Governor proposed, or the funding needed for at least 9 teacher positions. The additional operating funds proposed by the House over the Governor's recommendation mean an additional $8,100 to Telfair County.

Rep. Coleman concluded, "I am dedicated to keeping critical funding to our school systems as a priority in the House of Representatives."
