Benfield to Assist in Effort That Will Protect Military Families

AtlantaRepresentative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, D-Decatur, has recently decided to join in a unique partnership with Georgia's trial lawyers that will assist military families. The partnership, "Georgia Trial Lawyers Protecting Military Families" will provide free legal services to families and soldiers facing various hardships due to irrepressible circumstances resulting from US intervention in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"Unfortunately, many of our servicemen and women face substantial obstacles while serving and/or upon returning home. This effort being made is a wonderful cause, because it protects families from losing their homes, jobs, or financial assets. Although there are certain legal protections designed to keep families from loosing their homes, or becoming otherwise disadvantaged, regrettably these guidelines are not always followed, nor enforced," said Representative Benfield.

The coalition was formed after a group of concerned Georgia lawyers contacted the legal staff at Fort Stewart. The lawyers there informed the group that each month, Fort Stewart looses about ten of its soldiers in the war, many of whom leave behind families with pressing needs. The group also came across disturbing news that many soldiers are returning from service in Afghanistan and Iraq, and becoming homeless.

The alliance of Georgia's trial lawyers participating in the effort will assist families with needs in two ways. They will assist on-base military lawyers already working for the families, and they will work directly with servicemen and women and their families within their experience. Representative Benfield added, "Because of the sacrifices these brave men and women are making, I see no reason why I, nor any other trial lawyer in the state would not want to offer assistance to this worthy cause. I look forward to fighting for their financial stability and the opportunity to provide and secure what these men and women have earned."
