Legislator Takes Part in Executive Seminar for Southern Legislators

Atlanta Representative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield, D-Decatur, recently traveled to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to participate in the Executive Seminar for Southern Legislators. The four day seminar was attended by a nonpartisan group of 20 legislators from throughout the southeast. The seminar was funded through philanthropic grants given to the university.

The program has 12 years of experience in conducting executive seminars for business and professional leaders, and the politics-media program has a prime mission of nurturing emerging leaders in the South. While there, Rep. Benfield and the other attending legislators focused on 3 main objectives: spotlighting trends and issues in southern states, how to connect lawmakers with scholars and researchers, and how to probe our moral and social values and provide broad historical and cultural perspectives.

"I found this seminar to be extremely helpful. As a legislator, it is always a joy to receive valuable resources that enable me to better serve the people of my district," said Rep. Benfield. Main topics covered within the scope of the three main objectives were health care, education, demographics, and political trends in the South. "It was a great experience, and I feel that when the legislative session convenes in January I will be able to employ many of the strategies learned at the seminar,"said Rep. Benfield.
