Addresses Inmates Graduating from Innovative Program
Atlanta Representative Jeanette Jamieson (D-Toccoa) recently spoke on September 30th to inmates of the Metro State Prison in Atlanta who have graduated from the 2nd class of the I.M.P.A.C.T. Program (Inmates Providing Animal Care and Training Program). Under the program, inmates are responsible for raising and training a puppy to one day become a guide dogs after going through advanced training.
The inmates assigned a puppy are responsible for the upkeep of the kennel area, feeding and watering the dogs, maintaining observation notebooks for each puppy, notifying the staff of any veterinary concerns and socializing the puppies with the Facility. The inmates also teach the dogs basic obedience skills (i.e., sit, stay , come, down, heal, and recalls).
After the initial 14 to 16 month inmate-training period, the dogs are transferred to a Southeastern facility where they go through extensive medical checks, harness and traffic control training, and temperature assessment. If all of the training is successful, a visually impaired student is matched with a dog and they both go through training for approximately 26-28 days at the complex. Once that is satisfactory completed, the dog goes home with the student free of charge.
"This is a wonderful program making a difference that benefits Georgia's blind community, provides skills and a sense of purpose to inmates and makes man's best friend a valuable worker in today's society," said Jamieson. "I was honored to have been asked to speak at the graduation and would like to see the program expanded in the future."
A lawmaker since 1984, Rep. Jamieson is Chairperson of the State Planning and Community Affairs Committee. She also serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, Education Committee, and the budget writing House Appropriations Committee.
