Coleman Drives Effort to Make Speed Limit More Reasonable on Golden Isle Parkway
Atlanta House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) is requesting the Georgia Department of Transportation increase the 55 mph speed limit on the Golden Isle Parkway in between Perry and Brunswick. A slightly increased speed limit is expected help commercial transportation and attract more visitors to the area.
"Raising the limit on the Golden Isle Parkway to a more safe, reasonable and consistent speed would make this stretch of highway a viable alternative to similar highways in the area," said Speaker Coleman. "The DOT would also have complete discretion to set the proper limit in keeping with the design of the highway."
Josh Fenn of the Dodge County Chamber of Commerce said, "Increasing the speed limit of the Golden Isle Parkway will greatly enhance the economic vitality of the 341 corridor. Not only will it be good for commercial transportation but it will also be an asset to attract visitors the 341 corridor and the Golden Isles."
He also said, "We would like to thank the leadership of Speaker Coleman, Representative Hinson Mosley (D-Jesup) and Rep. Johnny Floyd (D-Hawkinsville) on this matter."
"It is ridiculous," said Lee Slade, of the Hawkinsville-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce. "It is a four lane highway and the speed limit should be the same throughout. I'd like to thank Speaker Coleman for his effort to bring some consistency to the Golden Isle Parkway."
"Our parkways are vital to the economy of this part of rural Georgia," claimed Carol Lavely, of the Telfair County Chamber of Commerce. "People are more likely to travel on a four-lane highway if it has a speed limit of 65 and it will allow them to see a beautiful part of rural Georgia. It will also entice them to stop and eat at one of our restaurants or stay in one of our hotels."
