JAMIESON CALLS FOR RESTORATION OF AG FUNDS
Lawmaker Wants Funding Kept For Agricultural Education
AtlantaRep. Jeanette Jamieson, D-Toccoa, is fighting to keep the Department of Education from slashing funds for agriculture training.
The department wants to transfer to another area dollars currently earmarked for teaching future farmers and Jamieson has written the State Education Superintendent asking that Georgia's agriculture students not take yet another funding hit.
The $195,000 shift would further erode funding for the program which has seen a $1.6 million overall spending cut since Fiscal Year 2001.
House Speaker Terry Coleman has joined Jamieson in expressing alarm and disapproval over the plan and both are actively working to thwart it.
"These cuts are undermining the very future of one of Georgia's largest industries," Jamieson said. "Farming education needs to remain an important priority and I encourage Superintendent Cox to continue the efforts directed by legislative leaders."
"Agricultural Education has grown tremendously and reached unparalleled achievements in the past five years, " Jamieson said. "It is evident that today's youth are going to be needed to fuel this industry in the future and it is my desire that these jobs remain in Georgia for Georgians."
Both Coleman and Jamieson have also expressed their strong opposition to a discussed $2 million agriculture education cut for the upcoming fiscal year.
