Skipper Named as one of State's Most Influential
Noted as Powerful Voice for Rural Georgia
Atlanta - State Representative Jimmy Skipper (D-Americus) was recently chosen by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of the 100 most influential leaders in the state. Skipper joins other business and civic professionals in the distinction.
According to the magazine, Rep. Skipper is a powerful voice for rural Georgia and one of Speaker Terry Coleman's (D-Eastman) chief lieutenants. He was also signaled out for cosponsoring HB 1587 during the 2002 Session of the Georgia Assembly. The law mandates that the State's transportation money be spent in equal amounts in each of the State's Congressional districts and that results in two-thirds of the state's transportation dollars be spent outside of the metro Atlanta area.
"Rural Georgia needs all of the funds we can get to build roads," said Skipper. "A good transportation system is a key ingredient in spurring economic development. We need to be sure that all parts of our state, including the rural areas, get a fair share of road construction money from the state. Skipper was also a sponsor of legislation adding US Highway 280 to the Governor's Road Improvement Program, which will ultimately lead to the four-laning of US 280 across Georgia and through Sumter County.
There were five southwest Georgia citizens, including Skipper, named by Georgia Trend. The others were Lt. Governor Mark Taylor from Albany, Secretary of State Cathy Cox from Bainbridge, Alex Poitevint from Bainbridge, and Kay Read, Editor of The Albany Herald.
Representative Skipper, a lawmaker since 1990, serves as Majority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and is a member of the Appropriations, Ethics, Public Utilities, Rules and Policy Committees. He represents Sumter, Marion and Schley Counties in the General Assembly. He also serves as Vice-Chair of the Southern States Energy Board which deals with energy production issues in the Southern United States.
