Representative Mosley Supports Governor's Education Initiative

State Must "Make the Grade" when it comes to Georgia's children

Atlanta Representative Hinson Mosley, D-Jesup, announced today that he is supporting and is a co-sponsor of HB 1193, which is one of Governor Sonny Perdue's intiatives to deal with disciplne and truancy in schools. Rep. Mosley is particularly supportive of a provision that allows the suspension of a teenagers driver's license who is consistently absent from school or disruptive in the classroom.

Rep. Mosley has sponsored similar legislation that provides schools with the tools to reduce truancy. HB 395, which has already passed the house, allows school officials to set up a protocol committee to adopt guidelines that spell out punishments and consequences for students being truant. The guidelines would be distributed to parents and their children when they reach age ten. Parents or guardians who violate the guidelines could face fines of between $25 and $100 and the protocol committee would be required to report truancy results they gather to the Georgia Department of Education every 3 months.

"This is an issue dear to my heart. It has been proven that chronic truancy is as a key predictor for negative outcomes in education, employment, and social success. In one of the schools in my district over 500 kids missed 15 days of school," said Mosley. "I applaud the Governor and am glad to sign on and work with him and his floor leaders. This bill will also penalize those who use profane language and give our teachers and bus drivers more support in dealing with unruly children."

According to Rep. Mark Burkahlter (R-Alpharetta), the Governor's Assistant Floor Leader, "I am thankful to my Democratic colleagues like Hinson Mosley for supporting this legislation. It is the right thing to do for Georgia's teachers and students."

"I would also like to thank Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) for his help in reducing truancy. He is one of the sponsors of HB 395 and is a true champion for Georgia's children," said Mosley.

Rep. Mosley, a lawmaker since 1992, is Vice-Chairman of the Transportation Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Policy and Human Relations and Aging committees.
