Cobb Lawmaker Teilhet Introduces Public Safety and Crime Legislation
Atlanta State Representative Rob Teilhet (D-Smyrna) has introduced 3 bills for the 2004 session of the General Assembly aimed at protecting the public. The session, which lasts for forty legislative days, usually ends in late March or the beginning of April.
One of the measures sets up a Senior Protection Advisory Council to oversee efforts to educate and alert elderly citizens about crimes committed against them, specifically fraud schemes, along with ways to protect themselves and how to report illegal activities. The Attorney General would serve as the chairperson of the council.
Another proposal requires the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council and the Georgia Public Safety training center to establish guidelines and procedures for identifying, reporting, and combating family violence. The bill also calls for greater legal protections for victims of sexual assault.
Lastly, Rep. Teilhet has introduced legislation that will streamline criminal justice procedures and give prosecutors additional tools that they need to prosecute criminals.
"These bill are needed to further protect the public and make it easier for the courts to handle criminal cases," said Teilhet. "I look forward to working with other members of the General Assembly for their passage."
Rep. Teilhet, a lawmaker since 2002, is Secretary of the Industrial Relations Committee and serves on the Judiciary and Education committees.
