Thomas Honored for First Year's Legislative Efforts
State's youngest lawmaker honored as Freshman Legislator of the Year

AtlantaRepresentative Alisha Thomas (D-Austell) was recently honored by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Inc. as its 2003 Freshman Legislator of the Year. The award is given to freshmen legislators who have demonstrated leadership qualities dedicated to promoting the general welfare of Georgia's citizens in the area of healthcare, education, criminal justice, employment, and economic development.
Representative Thomas was instrumental in passing HB 997, which allows the city of Douglasville to hold a non-binding referendum to test citizen interest in a smoking ban in public places. She was also co-signer on HB 866, which passed the House during the 2003 session and awaits action in the Senate. HB 866 would allow the Department of Family and Children Services director to appoint a single director over two counties within the same service delivery area.
Representative Thomas is also the primary author of HB 670, which seeks to change the way juveniles are treated by the state courts system, and to limit the instances where juvenile offenders are tried and sentenced as adults.
"I am very honored to have been given this award," said Thomas. "My first year was a year of hard work and learning. I didn't sit on the sidelines during my first year, and I intend to redouble my efforts during the upcoming session to represent the people of the 33rd district to the best of my ability."
