Marine Shrimp Farming Top Priority for Agriculture Committee Chairman
Will Participate in Meeting with Focus on Sustaining the Industry
Atlanta - State Representative Robert Ray, D-Fort Valley, Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, will be participating in a meeting on the Sustainability of the Marine Shrimp Project, which was created to promote shrimp farming in Georgia. The meeting will be in Hawkinsville, Georgia at the Opera House on September 8th at 10:00 am.
Attending the meeting, which is open to the public, will be shrimp industry and agriculture experts, economist and state lawmakers. Some agenda topics include the history and vision of the project, a basic economic model of a marine shrimp farm, producer interest and a presentation on USDA Aquaculture and Animal Well Being.
According to Ray, "88 percent of the shrimp purchased on the U.S. markets are foreign imports and 1.2 billion pounds of shrimp were imported last year. Georgia Agribusiness needs and wants some alternatives and marine shrimp farming is an avenue for many in the agribusiness to explore. There is a great demand for shrimp and we need to promote all means possible to increase Georgia shrimp production."
"Aquaculture is a means by which the U.S. and especially Georgia, can regain a firm foothold in the shrimp market," said Ray. "For example, Florida's net sales of aquaculturally produced shrimp were almost $7.5 million last year and by acres, shrimp have increased in that state from 36 in 2001 to 170 in 2002. If it can be successful in Florida why can't it be successful here in Georgia?"
The Georgia Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism has committed to $75,000 in its budget this year. The program still needs $236,000, mostly to pay for operating capital that includes purchasing shrimp and paying consultants. Over the years, Georgia has invested approximately $1 million in research and development of a shrimp farming industry in the state.
