SMITH & MOSLEY MEET WITH GOVERNOR Protecting Hunting Rights Promised

State Rep. Tommy Smith, D-Nicholls and Rep. Hinson Mosley, D-Jesup, met recently with Governor Sonny Perdue to assess the impact of legislation (HB 815) regulating deer hunting with dogs that was passed during the 2003 session of the legislature. They invited and were also joined by Rep. Al Williams, D-Midway, and Senator Tommie Williams, R-Lyons.
Smith wants to make sure the guidelines are fair and he is determined to ensure the rights of all hunters in south Georgia are protected.
"I think our meeting was a good first step and we will be working toward that end," Smith said. Yet still, Smith and other lawmakers remain concerned. "The main worry in my district is that it is a tradition for families to get together for the holidays to hunt," Smith said. "This goes back generations. The bill will require landowners to have 1,000 contiguous acres in order to hunt deer with dogs," Smith said. "Big outfits may survive, but the average and small dog hunting clubs may be eliminated."
Rep. Mosley said, "The way the legislation and rules have been formulated, we can see where there will be a lot of problems. Some folks who may not have the necessary acreage in one spot may not be able to hunt their own land. We really need to look at this a little closer and see if we can make some adjustments."
Both Smith and Mosley voted against the revised regulation.
According to Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Lonice Barrett, "Our goal is not to go out and see how many people we can find violating the new requirements."
Governor Perdue said, "I believe there is enough land and deer in Georgia to co-exist. We want the people of Georgia to be able to enjoy the wildlife and land and by educating and using common sense, we will be able to do this."
DNR and other Wildlife officials have agreed to sit down with legislators prior to the 2004 Legislative Session to address areas of concern and hammer out legislation if need be to correct any problems.
