James Calls on Governor to Protect Rural Hospitals from Medicaid Cutbacks
Atlanta Amid talks of declining state revenues and another round of budget cutbacks, State Representative Lynmore James, D-Montezuma, is calling on Governor Sonny Perdue to protect rural hospitals from the knife.
"I understand that times are very hard financially right now, and that sacrifices have to be made," said Rep. James, "But the harsh reality is that if we don't get some protection for our rural hospitals, many of them will have to close their doors, leaving a dangerous situation for millions of Georgia residents."
James was reacting to the most recent action in the Governor's office ordering all department heads to find 2.5 percent in cuts from their fiscal year 2004 budget, and another 5 percent from FY 05.
"Once we figure in the federal matching funds that we'll forfeit as a result of these cutbacks then we'll be missing around $100 million from the FY `04 budget, and $300 million in FY `05," James continued. "And that's on top of what we cut in the FY `02 budgets which already had our rural hospitals scrambling to survive."
"We've got to make sure all avenues are explored to keep these institutions which provide vitals medical services to our communities operational. Anything less would not only be irresponsible, it would be dangerous to millions of rural Georgians."
Rep. James is the Vice-Chairman of the Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Committee, and serves on the Appropriations, Banks and Banking, and Special Rules (Policy) Committees.
