Channell Named To Distance Learning and Telemedicine Board Aim Is To Advance Shared Information System

Atlanta State Rep. Mickey Channell, D-Greensboro, has been named to a special board which oversees Georgia's complicated system of medical and educational information sharing.

Channell was named to the post by House Speaker Terry Coleman, D-Eastman.

Put in place over a decade ago, the Distance Learning and Telemedicine system works to improve connectivity between hospitals and doctors with diagnostic tools throughout the state. Additionally, the system functions to improve media generated education in Georgia schools.

"As in all spheres of government we are working hard to manage and curtail our spending during critical times while at the same time trying to maintain the optimal level of service and performance," Channell said. "Data generating and delivery systems are one area which we can really scrutinize and shape to make sure that we get the most bang for the buck."

The multi-pronged goal of the system is to improve medical care, increase educational attainment, and enhance collaboration wherever possible within the state's nexus of information technologies.

Other targeted aims of the program are training in homeland security, nursing, information security and technology training for teachers.

"The board's job is to make sure that we are accomplishing our strategies," Channell said. "This is a great opportunity to maximize the application of resources through computer and telecommunications technologies."
