Purcell Recognized for Unrelenting Support of Georgia's National Guard

Prestigious Medal Presented

Atlanta Representative Ann Purcell (D-Rincon) received the National Guard Association of the United State's, (NGAUS) Charles Dick Medal of Merit during a ceremony held at the State Capitol in Atlanta on September 19th at 11:15 am.

The prestigious award was presented by Georgia's Adjutant General David Poythress on behalf of the NGAUS and is designed to recognize the contributions to the National Guard by elected officials to legislative bodies at the state and national levels.

In presenting the award, Major General Poythress noted that Rep. Purcell has been an ardent supporter of the National Guard in the General Assembly by sponsoring HB 227 during the 2001 session. The legislation created the Georgia Military Pension Fund and gives members a monthly service retirement allowance of $50.00 plus an additional $5.00 per month for each year of creditable service over 20 years.

Rep. Purcell, who is also the Honorary Commander of the Georgia National Guard's 165th Airlift Wing out of Savannah, said, "I am honored to help those who sacrifice for our country. They protect our freedom. It is a wonderful country in which we live I am thankful for the men and women who serve and have served in our armed forces."

Purcell, a lawmaker since 1991, chairs the Interstate Cooperation Committee and serves on the Appropriations, Agriculture and Consumer Affairs and Economic Development and Tourism committees.
