Maddox Tapped to Lead Study into MARTA Finances

AtlantaRepresentative George Maddox (D-Decatur) has been appointed by Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) to serve as co-chairman for the Joint MARTA Finance Study Committee.
"As Chairman of the MARTOC [Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Oversight Committee], Rep. Maddox has shown a great knowledge and leadership concerning the issues facing MARTA," said Speaker Coleman. "This makes him the ideal choice to lead this study."
The study committee was created with the passage of HR 397, which Maddox authored. The resolution's language describes a disparity in funding structure for a transit system which is regional, yet is mostly shouldered by the citizens of Dekalb, and Fulton Counties.
"This isn't just an Atlanta issue, it's a statewide issue. The metro area is the economic engine for the entire state. If we allow our mass transit system to decline, and we fall further into traffic congestion, then businesses, and investors will begin to look to other states to locate. That not only means less money in Atlanta, but less state money for schools, and health departments in rural South Georgia," said Maddox. "We've got to start thinking about how we're all in this together, and working toward solutions that are best for Georgia and its future."
The thirteen member committee is tasked with undertaking a comprehensive study of the conditions, needs, issues, with respect to the current funding structure. The committee will also recommend any action or legislation which deems necessary to ensure the future stability and well being of the regions most critical mass transportation system.
"I'm very grateful to Speaker Coleman for this opportunity," continued Maddox. "I look forward to working with the committee to gather as much information as possible, so that we may make recommendations which are in the best interest of the people and the state of Georgia."
In addition to serving as Chairman of MARTOC, Rep. Maddox serves on the House Appropriations, Industrial Relations, and Insurance Committees.
