Reece to Hold Hearing for House Bill to Ramp Up Truancy Enforcement

Atlanta-- Representative Barbara Massey Reece, who chairs the House Education SubCommittee on Regional Services for the State Board of Education, has announced a date for a sub-committee hearing to discuss HB 395.

The hearing will occur on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 at 1:15 p.m in Room 230 of the State Capitol building.

HB 395 seeks to confer upon local school truancy officers many of the same powers which a peace officer within the school. While not authorized to carry weapons, these attendance officials would be allowed to assume temporary custody of children absent from school in much the same manner authorized for peace officers. Additionally, the measure contains a provision which gives any peace officer assigned to a school the duties and authority of an attendance officer.
