Speaker Appoints Members for Special License Plate Study Committee

Atlanta House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman) has announced his appointments to the House Study Committee on Special License Plates. The Speaker has chosen Representative Mike Boggs (D-Waycross), Representative Quincy Murphy (D-Augusta), and Representative Mike Snow (D-Chickamauga) to serve with the eleven member House Motor Vehicles Committee in the study.

The Special License Plates Study Committee was created by House Resolution 407 which calls for a fourteen member committee to be composed of the House Motor Vehicles Committee and three appointees of the Speaker. Each year the legislature is bombarded with many new requests for special license plates designed not only to raise awareness but also revenue for a number of causes such as cancer or wildlife preservation.

While most all requests are noble, problems have arisen. The numerous special license plates already in existence in Georgia have created some difficulties for law enforcement officials in their attempts to identify and differentiate between special license plates. Furthermore, HR 407 lists a `confusion as to the intended destination or use of revenue generated by the plates.'

The study committee will gather information and make recommendations on guidelines to govern future consideration and implementation of special license plates. They will also make any legislative recommendations they deem necessary to help the state better track revenue generated from these plates.
