For Immediate Release: Legislation Sponsored by Sims Signed into Law
Tractors and Combines now Exempt from Ad Valorem Taxes
Atlanta State Representative Chuck Sims, D-Douglas, announces Governor Sonny Perdue has signed HB 527 into law during a ceremony in his office at the State Capitol on Thursday, May 22nd.
The legislation, sponsored by Sims in the 2003 Session of the General Assembly, exempts farm equipment, which is defined as any vehicle that is self-propelled and used primarily for agricultural, horticultural, or livestock raising operations, from ad valorem taxation.
"Year after year we have farmers getting out of a business, which has been in their family for generations, because they can not afford the high cost of their equipment or can not compete with overseas competition,"said Sims. "We need to do all we can to help Georgia's number one industry and hopefully this will provide some relief. I'd like to thank the Governor for signing this legislation into law."
Rep Sims, a lawmaker since 1996, is Vice-Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and serves on the Appropriations, State Planning & Community Affairs and Defense and Veterans Affairs committees.
