McConnell Recognition Scheduled By Georgia House of Representatives

Atlanta The Georgia House of Representatives will present a proclamation to former director of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) Gary W. McConnell recognizing his 12 years of service to the State of Georgia on Tuesday, April 15th at 11:00 am in the House Chamber at the State Capitol.
The proclamation was sponsored by Representative Mike Snow (D-Chickamauga) and House Speaker Terry Coleman (D-Eastman).
During his tenure as GEMA Director, McConnell coordinated emergency response and recovery efforts for 16 Presidential Declarations. These disasters included the March 1993 blizzard, the Palm Sunday tornadoes, the floods of 1994, Hurricane Opal, the evacuation of 350,000 coastal Georgia residents resulting from the threat of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, the Super Bowl 2000 ice storm and the deadly Valentine Day tornadoes in February 2000.
His tenure at GEMA was briefly interrupted in early 1996, when he was appointed Chief of Staff for the State Olympic Law Enforcement Command (SOLEC), and was responsible for the overall operation and coordination of the 29 state agencies and nearly 5,000 sworn law enforcement officers assigned to SOLEC. He returned to his duties at GEMA following the Olympics. McConnell resides in Chattooga County with his wife and daughter, all of whom are life-long residents of the county.
