BILL EASES TRANSITION FOR MILITARY ON THE MOVE

Wives and husbands of soldiers and sailors shoving off to wartime bivouacs will be eligible for unemployment checks when they leave their jobs to accompany their spouses at newly assigned posts, if legislation which passed the House recently clears the state Senate.
The measure, authored by Rep. Ken Birdsong, D-Gordon, would add to Georgia statute a provision which states: "Provided that leaving an employer to accompany a spouse who has been reassigned from military assignment to another shall be deemed to be for good cause."
The plan aims to make sure that families of service men and women can join them when they are ordered to relocate.
Birdsong chairs the House Defense and Veterans' Affairs Committee.
"Our military undergo a great many hardships," Birdsong said. "When we in state government can do something to ease that burden, we have to take the initiative."
House Bill 117 is now being studied by a Senate committee and Birdsong and other sponsors are pressing for swift passage.
