FELONY PENALTY ADDED Bill Targets Criminals Wearing Bullet Proof Vests
A bill which passed the House recently takes aim at crimes committed by offenders wearing bullet proof vests.
House Bill 173, authored by Rep. Victor Hill, D-Riverdale, adds a five year prison sentence for the commission of various violent crimes while wearing body armor.
The measure passed on a vote of 167-4.
Law enforcement officials have lauded the proposal as a means to curtail the use of bullet proof vests by felons and welcome the stronger penalty.
The five year sentence would be added to penalties already in place for such crimes as burglary and armed robbery.
"This will make violent offenders think twice about wearing a bullet proof vest during the commission of a crime," Hill said. "We have to do everything we can to prevent violent felons from having any kind of edge at all when they commit a crime."
The measure now goes to the Senate.
