Lawmakers Want to Ban Voice Mail for State Employees

March 4, 2003

Atlanta State Representative Tommy Smith, D-Nicholls, and Hinson Mosley, D-Jesup, have spearheaded efforts to make sure Georgians calling state agencies talk with a person and not voice mail.

They have introduced HB 627 which requires any publicly listed number for state workers, including those in phone books, on business cards and on official state stationary, be answered by persons during the workday.

"I've been getting complaints from a number of constituents, they call various state agencies and some of them -- not all of them -- can't get through," said Smith. "All they get is a machine."

"Many folks in rural Georgia must place long-distance phone calls to many state agencies in Atlanta and Macon and it cost them more money," said Mosley.

The measure now awaits approval by the House State Planning and Community Affairs Committee which Rep. Smith chairs.
