State's Youngest Lawmaker to Visit Juveniles in Adult Prison
Atlanta- Representative Alisha Thomas, D-Austell, along with "Able" Mabel Thomas, DAtlanta, and others plan to tour the Lee Arrendale State Prison, in Alto, Ga. The facility houses juveniles which have been tried and convicted as adults.
Members of the delegation will meet on Thursday, February 6th, at 7:45 a.m. in the Legislative Office Building. They will then proceed to the Lee Arrendale State Prison for a 9:00 a.m. tour.
The reason for the visit is so the delegation may witness first hand the conditions in which these minor children live daily.
"I want to see for myself what happens when we place children in adult facilities," said Thomas.
Rep. Thomas plans to introduce legislation during the 2003 session which will seek to modify Georgia's policy on trying juveniles as adults.
