MURPHY PROPOSES TEACHER TAX BREAK

February 27, 2003

Atlanta-- State Rep. Quincy Murphy, D-Augusta, recently introduced legislation in the Georgia House of Representatives which would extend a tax credit to Georgia's teachers.
"These men and women are dedicated public servants who put their time and their wallets into educating our children," said Rep. Murphy. "HB 431 is a way of saying we appreciate those efforts, and we're going to do as much as we can to pay you back."
HB 431, which was authored by Murphy, would allow teachers to receive an income tax credit of up to $250, to recoup expenses related to their profession. Pens, pencils, visual aids, and other items used for classroom instruction would be allowed under the exemption.
"These are cost that are coming out of our teacher's pockets," said Rep. Murphy. "It shouldn't be counted as income when it's being put right back into the system."
Rep. Murphy serves on the House Higher Education, Transportation, and Insurance Committees. He also serves as Secretary on the House Intra-Governmental Coordination Committee, one of only a few freshmen legislators in Georgia history to be named to such a post of leadership.
