Howard Endorses Teacher Pay Hike
Improving Economy Could Fund Increase
Optimistic about a rebounding economy, State Rep. Henry Howard, D-Augusta, is endorsing a modest pay raise for state teachers.
Howard joins other legislators backing a plan floated by House Democratic Leader Jimmy Skipper to urge Governor Perdue to include the increase in his recommended annual state spending plan.
Officials were told at recent budget meetings that tax collections last month were up 3.3 percent, or $34, over November 2002.
The monthly revenue increase was the fourth straight over the previous year and a significant indicator that the economy is improving.
"In as much as teachers are serving our future leaders' interests it is incumbent on us as trustees of tax dollars to keep pace with the national average pay scale of Georgia teachers," Howard said. "We want to attract the best teachers to teach our children."
"Even though we're in difficult times, we have very many loyal and hardworking teachers and many loyal and hardworking state employees who deserve a raise," Skipper said.
Georgia teachers and state employees have not received a raise since July 2002.
