Smith Holds Pre-Session Hearing on Transportation Issues

Calls for more cooperation among state transportation system stake-holders

Atlanta Representative Paul Smith (D-Rome) convened a pre-session hearing of the House Transportation Committee today. The meeting was intended to familiarize committee members with possible transportation issues and legislation they will be asked to consider during the upcoming legislative session.
Speaking at today's hearings were Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority Executive Director Steve Stancil, State Transportation Board Chairman Johnny Gresham, as well as representatives from the Atlanta Regional Commission, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, MARTA, Georgians for Better Transportation, and the National Conference of State Legislatures.
One issue that recurred throughout the day was discussion on the state's system of equitably sharing transportation dollars between each congressional districts. Georgia gained two congressional districts following the 2000 census, and the realignment of funding for those districts was requested. A number of participants also suggested that the committee consider legislation to exempt Interstate Highway construction and maintenance costs from the congressionally balanced funding equation.
Rep. Smith concluded the meeting by issuing a call for all the participants in the day's hearing, as well as any organization having a stake in Georgia's transportation needs, to work together to seek out and actively promote solutions which will benefit the state as a whole.
"These organizations represent a substantial brain trust on transportation issues," said Chairman Smith. "What Georgia needs now, and what I want to see, is more cooperation, and more communication among these groups in order to put that knowledge to work, and bring forth the best, most effective answers to our state's transportation questions."
