New Curriculum and Information System take Center Stage

November 18, 2003

Atlanta - State School Superintendent Kathy Cox, who heads the Department of Education, came before the House and Senate K-12 Education Subcommittee of Appropriations recently to update lawmakers on a new school curriculum being implemented and an information system that will enable schools to share valuable data on students. Committee members are responsible for writing the K-12 portion of the state budget for final review.

When completed, the new information system will cost a total of $14 million and most of that will be spent at the local level. According to the Superintendent, the primary reason will be to make accessible a student's complete school history state wide, which in turn, will allow for better decision making by teachers who want to increase achievement.

Cox said a new curriculum was needed to raise expectations, exceed standards and guide teaching and learning. The Department of Education also looked at many other states with performance standards in determining the best way to prioritize subject areas and will soon be hearing from communities through out Georgia to gain feedback on what will be proposed.

$1 million will be requested in the Supplemental Budget to roll out the new curriculum and $600,000 in fiscal year 2005 for implementation. Two-thirds of that will go towards training for teachers.

"I want to thank the Superintendent for her presentation as well as the other members," said Representative Kathy Ashe, D-Atlanta, Chair of the House K-12 Education Subcommittee of Appropriations. "The information provided will help us tremendously in our decision making as we work to write a K-12 education budget for the citizens of Georgia."
