NORTH GEORGIA VETS HONORED Reece Hosts Celebration

Atlanta - With brass-band-fanfares echoing in the rotunda of the statehouse, gray haired vets from World War II joined their younger comrades from more recent conflicts for awards and commendations recently at Georgia's capitol city.
Among them was a delegation of former soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines from Chattooga and Floyd counties hosted by Rep. Barbara Massey Reece, D-Menlo.
Dining on buffet chicken, vegetables, and sweet tea, their conversation ranged from the Me Cong Delta to the rubble strewn streets of embattled Europe as aging warriors mixed and reminisced.
Bused in for the day, vets from Georgia's Rome area 11th House District were warmly welcomed by a three-star-general and other speakers expressing gratitude for their service and reminding everyone listening that challenges to America's safety and liberty still lurk at all four corners of the globe.
"I don't think we can say thank you enough to north Georgia's veterans gathered here today," Reece said. "Our part of the state and country is well represented in the courage and valor of the men and women who have fought for the nation."
Adjutant General for the Georgia Department of Defense David Poythress also thanked vets in a keynote address which highlighted the critical "militia" role of the national guard in the country's war making capability.
A citizen soldier unit from Georgia specializing in targeting enemy positions was literally at the forefront of the northern advance from Kuwait as soldiers rolled into Iraq earlier this year.
"Georgia soldiers were the tip of the spear-point during the invasion," Poythress said. "Georgians were the first to cross the berm into Iraq."
