Birdsong Recognized by Purple Heart Recipients
Atlanta Representative Ken Birdsong (D-Gordon), along with other state lawmakers and dignitaries, paid tribute today to Georgia's veterans and Governor Sonny Perdue proclaimed November 11, 2003 as Veteran's Day in Georgia. Close to a hundred men and women who have served or are serving in the armed forces were in attendance as the Governor presented the proclamation to Pete Wheeler, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veteran Services, in a ceremony at the State Capitol at 11:00 am.
Rep. Birdsong was also recognized by some of Georgia's Purple Heart recipients in a separate ceremony, specifically for securing I-95, on the Eastern border of Georgia, as the Purple Heart Trail. In presenting him with a plaque, members of the Military Order of Purple Heart noted that Georgia has made great strides in paying tribute to those receiving the medal and it was a direct result of Rep. Birdsong's efforts.
"Nothing is more dear to my heart than the veterans of this state," said Birdsong. "Through their sacrifices they have made this the best country in the world and words can not describe how much respect and gratitude I have for their service. I am deeply humbled and will do all I can for them."
There are approximately 750,000 veterans living in Georgia and more than 25 million in the nation.
Rep. Birdsong, a lawmaker since 1976, is Chairman of the Defense and Veterans Affairs Committee and serves on the Rules and Transportation committees.
