CHANNELL NAMED INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS CHAIR

State Representative Mickey Channell, D-Greensboro, has been named Chairman of the House Industrial Relations Committee by House Speaker Terry Coleman, DEastman. Channell takes over the post from Rep. Paul Smith, D-Rome, who was named Transportation Chair.

The Committee handles all workers compensation legislation and deals with other issues such as minimum wage, employment security; and, any bills that deal with employer-employee relationships.

"I will do all I can to ensure a good business climate is maintained in Georgia but at the same time that employees are provided with the best possible working environment allowed under the law," said Channell. "I look forward to my appointment and working

"The House is reliant on the committee system and leadership provided by the committee chairs," Speaker Coleman said. "The volume and variety of legislation introduced during a session requires careful review by the committees empaneled to study and make recommendations concerning the bills and resolutions in the areas of their expertise."
"Representative Channell's outstanding service to the House, especially on the Appropriations Committee, makes him an able and respected choice for chairman," Coleman said. "His demonstrated leadership and ability will contribute greatly to the effectiveness of the Committee and the House generally."
Thirty-five separate standing committees consider by subject area the thousands of bills and resolutions which are introduced each year and range from topics including state budgeting, the courts, public health and taxation.
Channell, a lawmaker since 1992, also serves as Vice-Chair of the powerful House Appropriations and Transportation committees and is a member of the Health and Human Services, Ways and Means and Special Rules and Policy committees.
