Prison Officials Address Concerned Lawmakers
System Faces Severe Cuts
Atlanta Members of the Joint State Institutions and Property Committee on Thursday heard from Mike Light, State Parole Board and Alan Adams, Department of Corrections, on their respective agencies' budgets for the 04 and 05 fiscal years. Because of Georgia's current revenue shortfall, Governor Perdue has ordered state agencies to cut their current spending plans by 2.5 percent and ordered an additional 5 percent cut for next year.
To comply, agency officials have proposed closing many facilities including prisons, detention centers and halfway houses, all across the state. Other recommendations include the elimination of in house chaplains to counsel inmates, a reduction in prison library services and five furlough days for every correction employee over the next ten months.
"I am deeply concerned about what could happen to our prison system. It was sobering not only in terms job losses, but more importantly, public safety," said Representative Wallace Sholar, DCairo, Vice-Chairman of the State Institutions and Property Committee which oversees Georgia's Prison System. "However a great deal can happen between now and when a final budget is adopted. It is important to wait and see what the Governor recommends then the General Assembly can chart the best course."
