Gardner Examines Health Insurance Issue in Georgia

Task Force to Seek Mutually Beneficial Avenues for Expanding Coverage
Atlanta State Representative Pat Gardner (D-Atlanta) convened the first hearing of the Task Force on Health Insurance Options for Small Businesses and the Uninsured today. The purpose of the Task Force is to continue fact finding on the issue of access to affordable health care by citizens, as well as small businesses. The Task Force is also charged with reporting to the House of Representative with its findings and recommended action plan.

"Access to affordable healthcare in our state has reached crisis proportions," said Rep. Gardner, who chairs the Task Force. "It is absolutely in Georgia's best interests not only for the health and well being of its citizens, but for a healthy and vibrant small business community to investigate ways we can improve access to this vital service."

Attending the hearing were small business owners, representatives from the insurance industry, policy experts from the Georgia State University Andrew Young School of Public Policy, as well as community advocates. As chairwoman, Gardner expressed a desire to take a problem solving type of approach to the matter, and asked that all participants do the same.

"In the past, discussions on this topic were too territorial, with specific interests advocating their hard line, and trying to protect turf," said Gardner. "What we hope to try and do with this Task Force is to elevate the discussion and begin to search out our common ground, and to try to explore possible solutions which we can all agree upon that will expand health insurance coverage to a maximum number of citizens at a reasonable price."

This was the first of four hearings to gather facts, and explore ideas. The Task Force will meet again on November 6th, 2003, with the third and forth meetings coming on December 4th and 11th
respectively.
