LAWMAKER GOES BACK TO SCHOOL
Rep. Bert Oliver Urges Kids To Play Role In Government
State Rep. Bert Oliver, D-Glennville, told 5th graders at Appling Elementary School that they should take an interest in state government.
Oliver was taking part in national program which aims to educate young people on the importance of involvement in the governing process.
America's Legislators Back to School Week, which is sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL), involves more that 2,500 state legislators talking to as many as 300,000 students about the benefits of representative government.
Oliver, who also visited Appling County's middle and high schools, talked about the legislative process generally and specifically addressed how a bill becomes law and the role that citizens play in government.
The program is part of the NCSL's Trust for Representative Democracy, a nationwide civic education initiative which aims to engage young people and build their understanding and support for the country's democratic institutions.
The event's organizers are hoping to enlighten students on how the legislative process works and to encourage them to join in public service.
