STEPHENS NAMED SECRETARY OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM COMMITTEE
State Rep. Mickey Stephens, D-Savannah, has been named Secretary of the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. Stephens is one of the first ever freshmen lawmakers to be appointed to an influential committee officership.
Stephens was named to the post by House Speaker Terry Coleman, D-Eastman. Stephens was also appointed to serve on the Education and State Institutions and Property Committee. The committee system enables lawmakers to break legislation down by subject area in order to review and study proposed changes to state law. Each year literally thousands of bills and resolutions are introduced in the House and Senate. No single legislator could possibly read all of the measures which are drafted. By assigning legislation to committees with a specific area of expertise bills and resolutions are assured of a fair hearing. Legislatures rely heavily on the committee system to develop a knowledgeable and focused review of proposed legislation and in Georgia a bill cannot see action on the House floor without a favorable nod by the committee to which it is assigned. With rare exception, most members of the House of Representatives are assigned to three standing committees.
