Noel Lauds Legislative Pay Cut Proposals
1-800-282-5800
January 30, 2003
State Representative John Noel, D-Atlanta, is supporting proposed pay cuts for members of the General Assembly.
HB 192 and SB 76, which were introduced Wednesday, would reduce the salary of lawmakers by upwards of 10 percent. The bills are a result of $620 million shortfall facing the state of Georgia and the estimated saving would be close to $1 million.
"If the teachers, state employees and others will not even see their cost of living increase this year, then the least we can do as legislators is accept a pay cut ourselves," said Noel. "Although small, every little bit will help will reduce our shortfall and keep Georgia on sound financial ground."
The House measure also includes a pay cut for department and agency heads, and for the Governor, Lt. Governor and House Speaker.
A 10 percent cut, if approved by the Legislature, would mean a reduction of $1,620 a year in pay for lawmakers, who earn $16,200 for their part-time state jobs.
Rep. Noel is Secretary of the Journals Committee and serves on the MARTOC, Transportation and Natural resources and Environment committees.
